I'm a contemporary vocal coach, working mostly with pop, rock and musical theatre vocalists singing relatively 'straight', but I get the odd death metal screamer in to sort out some stamina in the pipes, and get some underlying technique to support the voice. Your post is bang on - death metal 'singers' might not be making a conventional sound, but that doesn't mean that the good ones aren't well trained. The throat will only take so much before it waves a white flag! I'm not a fan of death metal - just not my thing - but that doesn't mean that I can't respect what the performers have to achieve on tour. Congratulations on an intelligent (thank goodness!) posting about this tricky area. Absolutely right!
