Absolutely right! I'm a contemporary vocal coach, working mostly with pop, rock and musical theatre vocalists singing relatively 'straight', but I get the odd death metal screamer in to sort out some stamina in the pipes, and get some underlying technique to support the voice. Your post is bang on - death metal 'singers' might not be making a conventional sound, but that doesn't mean that the good ones aren't well trained. The throat will only take so much before it waves a white flag!
I'm not a fan of death metal - just not my thing - but that doesn't mean that I can't respect what the performers have to achieve on tour. Congratulations on an intelligent (thank goodness!) posting about this tricky area.

Interesting point - if you can't know why music appeals to others then perhaps it's best to write about why it appeals to you.

Aside from evil record companies and music overlords having an unwarranted grudge toward it, the major reason for its lack of popularity is its complexity! Death metal, especially the technical kind, is some of the complex popular music made, along with jazz and pretty difficult to get into because of that. Very few melodies, lots of disharmony, which the majority of people have a lot of trouble grasping.

I must've missed this post earlier...
Evanescence hates being FALSELY referred to as a "Christian Band".
Christian Music Today.com published an article saying:
"Evanescence emphatically declared they aren't a Christian band."
According to Amy Lee, "There are people hell-bent on the idea that we're a Christian band in disguise, and that we have some secret message … We have no spiritual affiliation with this music. It's simply about life experience." Ben and Amy used profanity to communicate their request to be removed from Christian bookstores and radio stations.
http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/glimpses/2003/fallen.html

My German host sister is a huge Evanescence fan and is also an atheist. She used to whinge big time about people who didn't research properly (or at all) before making bold judgemental statements about this issue. Take more care when posting such statements. Even more insulting than calling people "moronic gimps", is not bothering to take the time to get your facts straight about the music that they are passionate about.
