RETRO! JUST LET IT F***ING DIE!!!

Wolfmother. Airbourne. The Sword. Countless other poseurs and piss-ants churning out uninspired, tired, and painfully contrived throwbacks and b-sides stolen from the dusty retro best-of section in JB Hifi. These gimps with their “balls to the wall Aussie pub rock via Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Hendrix” is crap. It really is just the most irritating shite I’ve ever had to endure.

Look at this git-

And his competition: tough sweaty wife-beater wearing pub bogans with bad mullets that look like the rebels from a mid-80’s episode of Neighbours.

I understand the appeal of the progenitors. I even appreciate the talent of those directly inspired who took up the torch of their rock forefathers through the seventies and early eighties. I like Zeppelin, Hendrix wrote some damn killer songs and even though I don’t like prog much stuff like Camel and King Crimson has its appeal to many the world over. Black Sabbath are the godfathers of my precious METAL! So WHY?!?!?! if these original bands were so good, and their subsequent second-foundlings rocked less originally but still had merit, do we now suffer these trendy retro-chic wankers? Even Mike Patton hates them!

So, in summation, retro-chic is a thoughtless commercial gimmick, and the sooner the moronic gimps who consume music in a detached and pseudo-semiotic fashion look to the ORIGINAL SOURCE of 70’s rock, ie the bands that ORIGINALLY made such music, the better off we’ll be. Also, it’ll mean tragically hip bullshit like this will be replaced by an equally infuriating, soulless and disrespectful quick-cash-grab at a music style that meant something to a lot of people in times gone by. May the desolate one guide us down the left-hand path to the good stuff.

  1. Music snob! :p

Why can’t some people accept that everyone has different taste and simply rejoice in their excellent choice of music rather than dis others for theirs?

It’s great to highlight awesome aspects of your own music preferences, but making personal attacks at others doesn’t really help your case…

The targeted audience of this blog may be offended when u refer to them as “moronic gimps who consume music in a detached and pseudo-semiotic fashion”.

There are more democratic ways to show right/wrong, good/bad, quality/shite etc.

  2. For those who love this style, great. My rant is a bigoted, conceited and utterly contrived opinion based solely upon my own displeasure that the originators of this style of music get overlooked far too often by top 40 mainstream music appreciators BUT these retro-trend upstarts steal their thunder with little or no recognition of who they arguably stole their entire repertoire from.

I think it’s disrespectful that a band gets huge and makes an obscene amount of money off marketing and gimmick shtick when the real musicians that helped shape and define such a sound get left behind as too old or passe for contemporary times. It’s been done before and done far better, so if you enjoy what the retro bands do, track the sounds and ideologies to their original source and support the musicians that deserve the credit. Not the guys hanging on their tailcoats.

What people like is irrelevant to me and the reverse is true also; but credit where credit is due. And rants are meant to be passionate, self-indulgent and utterly myopic =)
But for argument’s sake DISCLAIMER*** DO NOT BE OFFENDED, THE AUTHOR OF THIS POST IS CLEARLY BENT AND OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY, TOP 40, AND MOST OTHER THINGS PERTAINING TO MUSIC, TASTE, SOCIAL DECORUM, AND MANNERS. PAID FOR BY THE FRIENDS FOR DYLAN FUND***

  3. I guess the other important thing I never mentioned was that I didn’t see myself as being any less moronic, gimp-like, or detached and psuedo=-semiotic in my consumption of music. My tastes sucks probably far harder than people who adore the aforementioned purveyors of retro-chic, thus, I’m not right, just bent ^_^

  4. I do agree with this post to a certain extent. I do enjoy some of this music because it is old school and different to what we are hearing regularly in the top 40 at the present moment, but it does annoy m that they are just doing what other bands have done previously 30 or 40 years ago.

There is only a small difference between these sort of artists, and the ones who take classic 70’s and 80’s song and directly rip them off in a top 40 disco context, but at least these guys are writing their own songs and not making money off someone elses composition.

Although it was quite ranty, I enjoyed your post. I think going on rants about what it is you are passionate about brings out honest feelings and brings out how you truly feel about something. I don’t hold back when I want to rant about something, especially when it is to do with music…my passion.

  5. Harsh! True, but harsh.
